Roofs for Pailas

Rural producers extract Candelilla wax in rectangular metal containers called “pailas.” These containers are buried at ground level, and a kiln is built beneath them to heat them using the Candelilla plants used in previous extractions.

These extraction sites are located near communities and are mostly outdoors, making the work extremely exhausting due to sun exposure and the extreme weather conditions of the semi-desert area, which vary throughout the year. Although some Candelilleros have attempted to install makeshift roofs using the Candelilla plants themselves, these are neither durable nor effective.

In previous years, Multiceras, in collaboration with some clients, supported the Candelilleros in improving working conditions by installing metal roofs over the pailas.

The “Roofs for Pailas” project begins

The Candelilla Institute has launched the “Roofs for Pailas” project, which involves installing metal roofs at extraction sites to improve the working conditions of the Candelilleros. Each paila is used communally by the producers, so this project will not only benefit the workers but will also indirectly contribute to the well-being of their families. By improving working conditions, the Candelilleros will be able to increase their wax production and, therefore, increase their income.

Each roof costs approximately $30,000 MXN ($1,500 USD). The Candelilla Institute is authorized by the Mexican Tax Administration to receive cash or in-kind donations and can issue a tax receipt to donors.
